Garden as Talisman

At the end of each winter, the garden beds start to call my name.

As a kid, I would watch my father order seeds from catalogs while snow still covered the ground; later, I would order my own, usually sitting at a computer while staring out at a frozen yard.

The thought of nurturing new life during the still dark days of February and March has always worked like a talisman against the cold and lack of light common at that time of year.

Visions of spring and warm weather make me want to run out and plant.
